Sustainable Living How can I fuse interests in sustainable living, animal rights, and world culture with a painting career?

Question by : How can I fuse interests in sustainable living, animal rights, and world culture with a painting career?
The last thing I want to become as an art major is an antisocial, intellectually starved painter, chained to a canvas all day every day to make enough to stay alive. Worst case scenario. It’s just, I have all these interests, and am trying to figure out how to join them together.. Any ideas?? Please

Going Green Facts Q&A: Going Green?

Question by snowboarder: Going Green?
ok there was a report on T.V. saying humanes only contribute 15% of the world’s “carbon foot print” the rest from volcones and other natural things. it says the people who beleive in the green stuff and say this is a true fact along with those who don’t. if this is true what is the point and spending billions of dollars to change everything we know that works. even if we do something amazing and cut it down by 66% it will still take 10 years to make up one and cost billions to do so. wouldn’t it be better to spend the money on things like fixing the economy and aids and cancer research to find a cure?

Best answer:

Answer by OGUN
Know this, the earth will be here. We may not but the earth will. So conservation is not about saving the earth. It about saving the inhabitants of the earth. If the earth can’t support human life then no illness or disease will matter. It’s like not being able to breath. Despite whatever is ailing you if you can’t breath nothing else matters.

Green Living Furniture Q&A: living room 15x30 and the dark green rug with maroon furniture I'm painting it tan what bold color would i use

Question by hennlee55: living room 15×30 and the dark green rug with maroon furniture I’m painting it tan what bold color would i use
it is an older house very small on one wall the bedroom doors are off the livingroom, on the other there is two windows, on the shorter walls is the entrance into the livingroom from out side and the other short wall in entrance into the kitchen, the living room is long but is cut inhalf with furniture couch loveseat and tv at one end, and dining room set with buffet and hutch at the other, would you paint it all one color or try and break it up into two rooms

Best answer:

Answer by rockchick
Because of the green & maroon, I WOULDN’T use another bold color. Those ARE pretty strong. I think the tan is good, but that could be a little dark also. Maybe take it up a shade or 2 like cream or a very pale butter yellow. You sound like you almost don’t have any full walls—every one has a door or window. I would definitely split the room making it LR & DR. You can paint half the room the color most complimentary to the maroon & greeen and then take 1 shade difference over to the DR so that your eye doesn’t really perceive a different shade but look better in the DR area. If possible I would try to get the dining room down at the doorway that leads to the kitchen. Then ppl don’t have to walk through the LR to get to the table and possibly spill stuff along the way. Perhaps have the LR area down by the BR entrance. Hope you like the suggestions—GOOD LUCK!!!

Green Living Articles Q&A: Why do people in the green living section doubt that eating meat harms the environment?

Question by Paranormal Kitty: Why do people in the green living section doubt that eating meat harms the environment?
These people supposedly care about the environment, but when I asked about being vegetarian for the sake of the environment, and linked the following article: http://www.taxmeat.com/ecological.asp I seemed to get negative responses.

Do they not believe that factory farming is one of the biggest polluters or do they just put their need for a cheeseburger ahead of their love for the environment? If they would cut down their meat intake, they could not only lower their environmental impact but would be living a much healthier lifestyle, cutting down costs of healthcare as well.

Producing just one hamburger uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles. By giving up the hamburgers, you could theoretically “pay” for the carbon costs of your drive to work.

Best answer:

Answer by omni4tress
wow thanks for the info. they can make “good” reasons up that support thier beliefs but I think reason and compassion will win out in the end. Thanks to people like you

Sustainable How much does a sustainable energy home cost to build?

Question by Jane: How much does a sustainable energy home cost to build?
I am contemplating buying/building a house, for the first time, with no deadline. I haven’t selected a site yet (I know that changes things) but I want to know what I can expect. How does the intial cost of a sustainable energy home typically compare with a less green option?

Best answer:

Answer by Sienna
This of course depends on a lot of different factors. But… for the most part it really doesn’t cost as much as many people think. Since you are building a home instead of trying to remodel a home it makes things much less expensive. Many people think that to be “sustainable” everything needs to be run entirely off of solar and will cost a fortune. This is very wrong.

First you need to figure out where most of the energy in your home is going to be used.
1. heating/cooling
2. Water heating
3. Major appliances
4. lighting & smaller appliances

So if you can reduce the energy needed by the largest energy users you can almost elminate your energy bill.

Green Living Room I put in Hunter Green Carpet in my living room and bedrooms. What is a good accent color for curtains, etc.?

Question by Katz: I put in Hunter Green Carpet in my living room and bedrooms. What is a good accent color for curtains, etc.?
I have maroon/hunter green drapes now, etc., and I’m sick of the color already. The walls are plain white and hubby doesn’t want anything permanent put up in case we decide to sell. What other colors can I use as far as paint, decor, etc. to down play all the green? My living room suit is a large sectional in a beige/black tweed. Any ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by Hockey Fan
A “Colonial Gold” and the always appropriate Navy Blue.
Maybe get a slipcover so hubby doesn’t have heart failure? Then you can use accent pillows to tie it all together. If they’re true draperies you can use those colors for tie backs or valances.
I have hunter green carpeting, a plaid davenport with green, maroon, navy and gold, dark green plantation shutters, a navy leather chair and a cream cloth arm chair with little medallions on it in, yes, dark green, navy, maroon and gold. My walls are cream and they’re staying that way. The only painting I MIGHT do is repaint the chair rail and the moulding – to match the carpet. Don’t make it TOO busy!
Good luck. The davenport kind of messes you up, hence the slipcover suggestion. You could get some nice, inexpensive pillows in the accent colors.

Its “going” which is the bike and “green” which is the recycleable part so something along those lines.

Green Living Magazine What are your green resources?

Question by paintswithlight: What are your green resources?
I love magazines like ecoLogical home (http://www.ecologicalhomeideas.com) which show how to live a healthier green life…what types of sources do you use?

Best answer:

Answer by Jeremy R
My green resources would be, my garden seeds, harvested from the plants I’ve grown in my garden from the previous growing season, like tomato seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, corn seeds, cucumber seeds, watermelon seeds etc, etc. thusly…..I do not have to buy new seed next spring, I already have them on hand, and ready to plant.

I would also say trees…….But I think we need to preserve trees, trees clean our air, and provide essential life saving oxygen, trees are beautiful with their spring and summer green leaves, not to mention their astonishing beautiful fall foliage!

Please plant a tree!

Green Living Technologies Q&A: Why does Disney Channel think it's doing so much good by promoting "green living" when...?

Question by THE *only* lePineyapple: Why does Disney Channel think it’s doing so much good by promoting “green living” when…?
Just creating its “eco-friendly” commercials would take up about as much energy as if a UFO decided to land on Earth and recharge its battery with a giant power socket.
Of course, that’s an exaggeration, but how much energy do they think they suck up by creating a commercial indoors, with green screens and lighting and tons of plug-in technology…They would’ve been doing the earth a favour by not making the commercial at all. However, there are plenty of eco-friendly alternatives they could’ve used–one of them being shooting outside in the natural sunlight rather than a crapload of light bulbs. Anyway this is just my opinion. Correct me if I am wrong. I just think they’re being very big hypocrites.
Homefries86 – Wow, that’s a very good point. However, I still believe that the commercial in itself would be easier to believe had they used natural lighting and less technology. Even the makeup they use for the actors/actresses contain chemicals. I understand there is only so much they can take away from the commercial, but I’ve seen even amateur “commercials” on youtube that were quite lovely in both their quality and their message even without all the energy-sucking technology that is used in a professional filming.
NaTii- YOU’RE not thinking straight. People have been recycling way before Disney Channel decided to join in to the pot. It’s just a good investment plan for them. Do you think the guys all the way up in corporate give a crap? No. Kids can learn to recycle through HUNDREDS of sources other than some TV station with second-rate sitcoms.
Plus, I didn’t say the message or the commercial was bad.
I’m saying there were many things they could’ve given up to make it worth its word and they did NOT. Plain and simple.

Because Disney is stupid.

Alternative Energy What is the cheapest alternative energy to implement and how does it compare to existing conventional energy?

Question by Dusty N: What is the cheapest alternative energy to implement and how does it compare to existing conventional energy?
What are current energy prices of alternative and conventional techniques?

Best answer:

Answer by odysseus1959
Solar is the best, not the cheapest up front, but in the long run, always the best. Long after your oil runs out, long after your coal mine is closed, long after your nukes stop glowing, solar will still be there. Think about solar panels made 30 years ago still work just fine. The only power plant you want near you is a renewable one.

That is very difficult because they have no money for initial investment. And it cannot be demonstrated that investments in solar, wind or water can ever pay off for 3rd world countries. Green Energy What is it doing to implement green energy?

Question by laila c: What is it doing to implement green energy?
You promised during your campaign the implementation of green energy, but we’ve seen little being done. Don’t you think this would be a great opportunity to create jobs not just in the short term but in the long term?

Best answer:

Answer by whsgreenmom
It is helpful to remember that the President of the US has little power, he doesn’t get to vote on law. His only real power is veto. He can speak to people with the power to vote, but other than making a compelling argument for or against something he can’t make promises or threaten anything except to veto. Unfortunately the American public spoke loud and clear in the last set of elections, they don’t give a crap about the environment. They want lower taxes and cheap energy and products.

Green Living Articles Why can't you post comments on the Global warming section of Yahoo: Green?

Question by Blappers: Why can’t you post comments on the Global warming section of Yahoo: Green?
Yahoo green which I discovered today has a section for green living and global warming and others. I can leave comments on the articles on green living but not on articles talking about global warming.

What’s the deal?

Especially since the Global Warming debate is nowhere near over.

Best answer:

Answer by Austin C
Well, its been changed to “climate change” because most scientist are now agreeing its global cooling.

In fact, we were doing a good thing by putting CO2 in the air. We’re postponing another Ice Age.

Green Living Newsletter Q&A: Why are environmentalists so critical of people?

Question by Randall E: Why are environmentalists so critical of people?
"If you ask me, it'd be a little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy because of what we would do with it…" – Amory Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute.

"The only real good technology is no technology at all. Technology is taxation without representation, imposed by our elitist species (man) upon the rest of the natural world"
– John Shuttleworth, founder of Mother Earth News.

"Isn't the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn't our responsibility to bring that about?" – Maurice Strong, Secretary General 1992 UN Earth Summit

"Everything we have developed over the last 100 years should be destroyed." – Pentti Linkola

We must make this an insecure and inhospitable place for capitalists and their projects…. We must reclaim the roads and plowed land, halt dam construction, tear down existing dams, free shackled rivers and return to wilderness millions of tens of millions of acres of presently settled land. —David Foreman, Earth First!

The extinction of the human species may not only be inevitable but a good thing….This is not to say that the rise of human civilization is insignificant, but there is no way of showing that it will be much help to the world in the long run.
—Economist editorial

We advocate biodiversity for biodiversity's sake. It may take our extinction to set things straight.—David Foreman, Earth First!

Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental.—Dave Forman, Founder of Earth First!

If radical environmentalists were to invent a disease to bring human populations back to sanity, it would probably be something like AIDS. —Earth First! Newsletter

I suspect that eradicating smallpox was wrong. It played an important part in balancing ecosystems.—John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal

Human beings, as a species, have no more value than slugs.
—John Davis, editor of Earth First! Journal

"Phasing out the human race will solve every problem on earth, social and environmental"– David Foreman, founder of Earth First!

"If there is going to be electricity at all, I would like it to be decentralized, small, solar-powered"– Gar Smith

"The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States…"– Michael Oppenheimer, Environmental Defense Fund

"Man is always and everywhere a blight on the landscape."
– John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club.

The right to have children should be a marketable commodity, bought and traded by individuals but absolutely limited by the state. – Kenneth Boulding, originator of the “Spaceship Earth” concept (as quoted by William Tucker in Progress and Privilege, 1982)

We have wished, we ecofreaks, for a disaster or for a social change to come and bomb us into Stone Age, where we might live like Indians in our valley, with our localism, our appropriate technology, our gardens, our homemade religion — guilt-free at last! — Stewart Brand (writing in the Whole Earth Catalogue)

Human happiness, and certainly human fecundity, is not as important as a wild and healthy planets…Some of us can only hope for the right virus to come along. — David Graber, biologist, National Park Service

The collective needs of non-human species must take precedence over the needs and desires of humans.—Dr. Reed F. Noss, The Wildlands Project

If I were reincarnated, I would wish to be returned to Earth as a killer virus to lower human population levels.—Prince Phillip, World Wildlife Fund

We, in the green movement, aspire to a cultural model in which killing a forest will be considered more contemptible and more criminal than the sale of 6-year-old children to Asian brothels.—Carl Amery

Every time you turn on an electric light, you are making another brainless baby.—Helen Caldicott, Union of Concerned Scientists

To feed a starving child is to exacerbate the world population problem.—Lamont Cole

Cannibalism is a “radical but realistic solution to the problem of overpopulation.” — Lyall Watson, The Financial Times, 15 July 1995

So !!! What are you trying to prove ? That environmentalists are too single minded to care for people’s welfare ? That they would rather see the extinction of the human race to save their environment? That the human being is the shortsighted one destroying the world ? Don’t assume, because the environmentalist is well educated, that he isn’t biased. Have you seen any of these proposing plans which would accomodate both man and beast ? You won’t !! Not in this lifetime!!

Going Green Facts eco-friendly facts you should know...?

Question by jstarrrrr: eco-friendly facts you should know…?
here are some eco-friendly/going green facts i bet you didn’t know…

I am a vegetarian and did you know that half of the water in america is used to feed animals raised for food. These animals are also responsible for 2/3 ofthe worlds greenhouse gases. Millions of these animals are raised each year. The united States doesn’t even need that many animals to feed us each year,We overprovide.

Animals are abused for leather and wool. Believe it or not.

If every house in america changed ONE lightbulb to a flourescent light we could power 3 million houses in america for a year.

Did you know that recycling one aluminum can will save enough energy to power a TV for three hours? Did you know that 14 recycled plastic bottles yield enough fiberfill for a ski jacket?

by going to car washes the water is treated afterwards so that the harmful chemicals aren’t released into the waterline.
joe h- yes, animals are abused. ahve you ever read about slaughter houses and how animals are reaised for food. You think you’re eating clean, healthy meat? think again! try doing some research..there are so many antibiotics and preservatives in there, that it is the definition of anti-healthy. Animals are sick when being slaughtered. go read soemthing for once! I care about humans but, we overproduce meat and that is a fact. Aniamls need compassion and humans only care about themselves. I knwo tehre are soem die-hard meat eaters out there but, if anyone took the time to just read about how animals are raised and treated in slaughterhouses i thnik they’d at least slim down on how much they eat. it gets on my nerves when peopel assume vegetarians only care about the animals and that we make stuff up and animals aren’t really abused, or that we should let meat eaters be..in all honesty i’m just trying to raise awareness and these people have soemtimes never see na video or article.
hipp5- well, i think that response was kind of rude. Have you researched and you really think that? So multiply that by a million..over a million actually. That’s how many animals are killed so YOu can eat it. Do you even know what is actually in meat products? go research and if that’s hard enough i’ll give you a link

Why Go Green Why does green tea make me double over in pain on an empty stomach?

Question by caboose: Why does green tea make me double over in pain on an empty stomach?
I know you’re not supposed to drink it on an empty stomach, :) BUT if I’m studying, I’m not really paying attention to things… until I collapse in a mass of squivering, grinding and knashing of teeth. I drink coffee on an empty stomach, (in mass quantities), regular tea is fine, but GREEN tea brings paralyzing pain without food.
I went to a tea ceremony and noticed that they always serve little cakes and things, thereby avoiding collapsing samurai.
I keep bread by my desk now, but I was wondering why green tea would do that to my body when coffee and other harsh stimulants don’t.

Answer by josh0895988
It could be the high anti-oxidant level. Which, if your body is full of oxidants. (which most are) gets attacked severely when on an empty stomache. The anti-oxidant compounds seeking what ever it can find to nuetralize. Without food this can cause pain in some cases.
