Probably the bests neighborhoods that have that “simple feel” and has a lot to do within walking distance are the Hollywood District and the area around 39th and Hawthorne. There are lots of restaurants, shops and bars, but both have decent sized grocery stores and things like that. Both have good access to mass transit, too.

Otherwise, I think the Alberta area is cool and there are sections of Belmont, Division and kind of close in — around 20th to 39th. Sellwood is nice, but a little bit trendy and more expensive. If you want a little cheaper, downtown St. John’s in North Portand can offer a lot, but the neighborhoods aren’t quite as nice and it’s farther from the center part of town.

Probably the easiest way to get from Portland to Seattle without a car is on Amtrak. I would say Greyhound would work, but I never really liked taking the bus. You can also rent a car pretty cheap these days.

The Portland train station is near downtown on the west side, near the Broadway Bridge. The Seattle station is near the big stadiums for the Seahawks and Mariners. I don’t know what other stops there are, I have only taken the train from Portland to see a Seahawks game before. We brought alcohol, so some details are a little fuzzy. :)
